Cow Palace Wrestling In A Bygone Era

Cow Palace wrestling in a bygone era

During the 1960s, professional wrestling was huge at the Cow Palace. There are vast websites devoted to the phenomenon, which was part of a circuit that included Sacramento.

Now a new book, When I Shot Good & Bad Guys Who Wrestled at the Cow Palace, commemorates the era. The book collects photographer Jim Fitzpatrick’s work documenting the bouts held by promoter Roy Shire, a former wrestler who became the biggest wrestling promoter in Northern California in the 1960s (scroll down in that page to “The Beginning” for Shire’s story).

You can order When I Shot Good and Bad Guys here.

San Francisco's Cow Palace Wrestling Photo Book

Wrestling and photography have been synonymous with each other since the inception of portable cameras. Wrestling and San Francisco’s famed Cow Palace have also been linked since the grand old building's inception in the 1950s.

Even though the building has become popular for hosting the west coast legs of such legends as Liberace, John F. Kennedy, The Beatles and Elvis Presley, probably the one most consistent mainstay of the building was Roy Shire’s National Wrestling Alliance San Francisco territory. Names like Ray Stevens, Pepper Gomez, Pat Patterson, Mr. Fuji, Don Muraco and Dory Funk Jr. would grace these hallowed halls all while being photographed by a young kid fresh out of high school named Jim Fitzpatrick. He'd later find fame in another funky California fad -- the San Francisco Bay...

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim Fitzpatrick (born April 15, 1959) is an author, sports photographer, portrait artist and former athlete in the sport of roller derby. Fitzpatrick, born and raised in San Francisco, California, skated for the San Francisco Bay Bombers, of the International Roller Skating League (IRSL) Roller Derby, the 1977–1987 revival of the sport. Following a number of shoulder separation injuries, he became a league referee.

In 1980 he skated in an altered version of Roller Derby which combined Roller Derby rules with those of Roller Ball called Roller Superball. This series was held in Luna Park Arena in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In 1987, he performed Roller Derby stunt skating in an MTV-aired music video for the song "Love Is Not a Game" by McAuley Schenker Group.

He returned to skating in 1993, competing on Team USA in the...

Jim Fitzpatrick: From Pain to Fame
Sun, May 1 2011 05:13 | Therapy, Sports, Health, California, ABC, Television, Tips, Bay Area, Pain Relief, Inspirational
One of my patients, Jim Fitzpatrick, was recently interviewed in the Mercury News on his on going fight with chronic pain and his success despite this disability. He also recently completed an interview with Cheryl Jennings and myself about alternative approaches to chronic pain at ABC. I am really proud of Jim and encouraged by his will to conquer pain.

Excerpt from the Mercury News article "From roller derby to art gallery":
About 10 years ago, the South San Francisco resident was coping with mobility issues and chronic pain after retiring as a firefighter due to a disability.

He went through years of physical therapy until, in recent years, his doctor recommended a treatment known as myofascial release, which decreased his pain and made him more mobile again.

Wanting to help others coping...
